Tried and tested protection methods
There are many products and methods of winter protection for greens. Over the years we have tried them all at the Club de golf Rive-Sud. Every given year there will be some methods that work and some that don't. This is due to the fluctuations in temperate and climate changes, precipitation rates and timing of closing and opening greens.
The sole purpose of our insulation system is to minimize all of the ups and downs of temperatures, humidity, moisture levels and light exposure by having a barrier, which creates a more stable climate, controlled living area for the turf grass. Even when the temperatures are going from +10 to -30 outside, the temperatures below the insulation system will remain barely unchanged with a 90% decrease in temperature change.
The TNT difference
These temperature changes can cause death to turf if it is not protected by our system. To put it simply, when the days are warmer than usual in the spring or fall, the grass can come out of dormancy and take water into its crowns. If this warm period is followed by a sudden drop below freezing point, then the water will freeze inside the plant and cause its cells to rupture. The result of this is severe turf injury or death. Something so simple, which could easily be avoided with a system that stabilizes and eliminates rapid temperature fluctuations.
Product characteristics
We have tried various types of bubble insulation over the years. Different thicknesses, different bubble sizes and different colors. We now have the best that there is to offer. It is the largest bubble that we can produce per square inch possible. The spacing between each bubble is the widest distance possible to allow the most airflow possible per square inch. These are the most important things to consider and are what sets us apart from the competition. If you use a small bubble with small spacing's and look at it once it is placed on the turf, it is really not doing much more than a solid ground cover. Our system has been tested against turf with airflow being better than anything else out there.
Our rolls of insulation are easily managed and are conveniently cut into 8-foot widths by 250-feet long. This allows the user to roll them back up into rolls for easy storage during the summer. We do not sell 4-foot widths because they are difficult to manage being so small, nor do we sell 12-foot because they are too wide to be able to roll back up in the springtime. 12-foot widths also require an extra worker to handle them. Our 8-foot widths are the most convenient and easy to manage size, which is why we produce them.
Our blue covers are the best at restricting the amount of sunlight through to the ground without completely blocking it out. This prevents excessive growth under the covers, which can also lead to further problems in the spring when it comes time to cutting. Our system encourages lateral growth rather than vertical growth because of the slow and steady amount of sunlight allowed to penetrate. This leads to greens that actually recover from injuries in the fall during the time that they are covered.
